Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father was absent from the family, so she was taken care of by her mother, grandmother and godparents. In her childhood Ford experienced anxiety related to an obsessional-compulsive condition. Ford was interested in the profession of acting in her teens and became a member of the National Youth Theatre. She had been accepted to Sylvia Young Theatre School. However, after a short period of days, she realized that Sylvia Young Theatre School was not the right place right for her. Ford made an application for admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama and eventually secured an interview on her fourth try. Shaun Dingwall - who later played Pete Tyler in Doctor Who was among Ford's classmates. Ford's debut on TV was the 1991 episode Surgical Spirit. By the time she graduated, Ford already went by "Catherine Tate". Tate was featured in such television shows as The Bill, Men Behaving Badly, and London Burning. In addition to her regular theatre work, Tate joined in the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. Tate was soon recognized for her stand-up comedies, that were added to her show in the year 1996.
